B(ig) J(olly) M(an) PRESS was founded in the latter part of 1996 by the newly evolved John B. Ford (who used to be something entirely different!). He began proceedings by issuing a slim chapbook in November 1996 which featured two of his William Hope Hodgson flavoured tales "Within The Sea of the Dead" and ""To Dwell On Tainted Ground".
This met with a favourable response and a second collection was planned. meanwhile Unreal Press were planning a collection of John's work and got as far as a mock up copy of the book - but that is as far as they got. "Macabre Delights & Twisted Tales" never appeared under the Unreal Press banner, so John decided to put it out on BJM. It was published in April 1997. Unlike the preceding volume this one also contained impressive artwork, most notably the Beardsly-esque work of Gerald Gaubert. "Macabre Delights" was swiftly followed by yet another collection from this prolific master of the macabre and the slim, but nicely formed "In The Gallery of Death & Other Tales" lurched into an unsuspecting world impressively illustrated by Gaubert.
John's work was appearing in all the leading small press magazines of the day and he began to make contact with many other writers of the 'strange and macabre'. He hit upon the idea of an anthology in which he could gather together the best work of these up and coming writers and so it was that the legendary "Terror Tales" was spawned. Issue #1 was published in November 1997 to much critical acclaim and #2 followed in April 1998.
It was about this time that John and Steve Lines made contact and Steve began to illustrate a lot of John's work when it appeared in the various magazines. Steve also contributed art to the second issue of "Terror Tales".
It was only natural then that Steve would illustrate John's next BJM collection "Ghouls & Gore & Twisted Terrors". This lavishly illustrated chapbook was published in May 1998. This was an impressive collection and one wondered how it could be bettered - Enter "The Derelict of Death" one of John's 'Sargasso Sea' stories co-written with best selling author Simon Clark. Steve Lines once again illustrated and this is now a sought after collector's item.
BJM went from strength to strength. Terror Tales#3 and #4 hit the streets and then John began to issue perfect bound single author collections by such writers as Paul Finch, Paul Bradshaw, Paul Kane and a few people not called Paul, such as David Price, Steve Lines and Quentin Crisp.
And so it would have continued, but John and Steve decided to take the publishing process one step further and teamed up, under the name of Rainfall Books to issue John's first hardbound collection "Tales of Devilry & Doom".
